34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. Matthew 10:34-36
Given the heated exchanges I keep reading on Facebook among those who are supposedly friends and family, I can't help thinking of of the quote above. Was Yeshua referring to religion or politics? Is there a difference?
Either way, it appears that the current election outcome has driven a deep rift that goes beyond part affiliation or religious freedom. We are experiencing another Civil War, where the Mason Dixon line runs through our own houses. It's so toxic, in fact, that I thought it might be helpful to provide some ground rules for discussion when addressing those who feel that Trump was the clear choice. These are not bad people. You know them. They are your family, they are your friends, they are you neighbors. We may not agree with them, but we should at least attempt to disagree with them in a civil and loving way. Therefore, I give you my "Guidelines for Indoor Voices: How to be polite to and have civil discourse with racists, Islamophobes, misogynists, homophobes, and anyone else who voted for Trump":
Let us begin with the racists, those little white, angry, and frightened folk who feel intimidated by the brown and the black people who seem to feel as though they've gotten short shrift in this land of opportunity, given a back seat to those aggressively caucasian families that have been running things for quite a long time. Of course when Obama was elected, many of these little white folk (lwf, from hereon), panicked and thought they're reign might be over. Thankfully, they found a savior in Donald Trump, and so they came out in droves to vote for him.
So, how does one, then, engage in civil dialogue with a racist? Let's see if we can do it in Lesson #1:
Racist Trump Voter: "I voted for Donald Trump because he's going to make America great again."
Me: "Again? Curious adverb at the end. Was America better in the past?"
Racist Trump Voter: "It was great in the beginning."
Me: "Well, with all due respect, there were a few small kinks, no?"
Racist Trump Voter: "Like what?"
Me: "Gosh, I dunno. Slavery, xenophobia, launching a holocaust against the native peoples."
Racist Trump Voter: "Slavery wasn't against the law then. As the for the natives, two words: Manifest Destiny."
Me: "But what about the systemic racism we have today, such as within our own law enforcement?"
Racist Trump Voter: "That's not racism. If black people would stop resisting arrest, then law enforcement officers wouldn't have to use force. Besides, white people are killed by the police too. Black people kill cops."
Me: "Well, if you will just look at the statistics, and consider that white people don't need to fear the police because -- "
Racist Trump Voter: "You sound like those thugs from Black Lives Matter. ALL lives matter, including Blue!"
Me: "Well, I guess my point was that as a white person, I wonder if you're in a position to speak for the anger and fear of the African-American community."
Racist Trump Voter: "I have black friends and they voted for Trump."
Me: "I'm a little confused as to how that relates to my point."
Racist Trump Voter: "You're one of those bleeding heart liberals who thinks everything should be PC and that everything anyone says that you don't agree with is racist."
Me: "So, I'm guessing you don't think there's still racism in America?"
Racist Trump Voter: "I'm not racist. I just think blacks need to take responsibility for their own lives and stop killing cops and committing crimes."
Me: "We've been discussing the African-American community here, but how do you feel about Hispanics?"
Racist Trump Voter: "We need to build a wall so that they don't come in."
Me: "What about the ones who are here legally?"
Racist Trump Voter: "They need to speak English."
Me: "Why?"
Racist Trump Voter: "Because this is America. And that's the language of America."
Me: "Well, that's not technically accur--"
Racist Trump Voter: And we need to stop those Arabs from coming here too."
Me: "Because they're terrorists?"
Racist Trump Voter: "Bingo."
Me: "Okay, well, listen, I want to thank you very much for talking to me. This has been very enlightening, or rather whitening."
Racist: "You're welcome. God Bless America and Donald Trump, her POTUS!"
Me: "Sigh."
